15 Month Research Associate Post at UCL: Sustainable Energy Access in Mozambique

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,056 to £40,055 per annum , inclusive of London Allowance.

Based in DPU’s vibrant hive of activity, a full time post doctoral research associate is required to work in a new British Academy project to understand the interactions between energy access and conflict in Mozambique. The project “Sustainable Energy Access in Mozambique: Socio-political factors in conflict-laden urban areas” is funded by the Sustainable Development Programme of the British Academy. This scheme is provided under the Global Challenges Research Fund, which is part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment.

The project is aimed at understanding the uneven geographical patterns of energy access in Mozambique; examining how the political economy of Mozambique influences energy access; and examining the everyday processes of symbolic and economic violence constraining energy access and will be delivered in partnership with the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, in Maputo, Mozambique; University of Oxford; and the University of York, supported by local organisations in Mozambique. The project follows a methodology of knowledge co-production, combining traditional quantitative and qualitative methods with processes that integrate the knowledge of infrastructure managers and communities through participatory and co-design workshops.

The postholder will join an active research environment in DPU consisting of PhD students, research associates and academic staff members. The postholder will have the opportunity to visit research groups in partners’ organizations. The post holder will be invited to contribute to the DPU’s research clusters and contribute to the intellectual life of the department.

The post is funded for a period of 15 months in the first instance, starting 1 January 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Candidates must possess PhD or equivalent in a relevant area (e.g. urban studies, development studies, human geography, development planning, African studies) and have fieldwork overseas experience and have the ability to analyse, write up data and present complex information effectively to a wide range of audiences, with quantitative research skills or willingness to develop them under the PI’s guidance.

Candidates must also have strong interdisciplinary analytical skills, the capacity to manage and organise information, with proven experience of working in a research environment. Evidence of a flexible approach to working as part of interdisciplinary team, ability to successfully and independently co-ordinate and prioritise varied workload within deadline is require, with the ability to communicate research verbally and in writing, to individuals and groups, with impact.
