Forthcoming Position: Bangabandhu Chair Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT)



The Government of Bangladesh has gifted an endowment for establishing the Bangabandhu Chair Professorship at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The Chair is named after Bangladesh’s Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

AIT is currently looking for high-caliber candidates for the Bangabandhu Chair Professor, who will work on energy sector development of Bangladesh, with a focus on “ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy,” a key Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). The Bangabandhu Chair Professor position is open to all nationalities, and will have an initial term of four years, which could be either a full-time appointment, or a joint appointment with the candidate’s home or parent institution.

The Chair Professor would be working principally on the energy sector development of Bangladesh, on SDG 7, with focus on energy efficiency and/or energy planning and policy.


The endowment, worth around US$ 0.6 million (4 years) also has a researcher component, who will be working on his/her doctoral studies as the “Bangabandhu Chair Fellow” at AIT. The remuneration for the Bangabandhu Chair Professor is at the maximum AIT full professor salary scale of US$ 80-90,000 per annum, and with additional benefits such as settlement, medical, provident fund, social security, educational reimbursement for children etc.

From a timeline perspective, and given the urgency in finalizing the appointment, shortlisting is expected by the end of October 2017 for interviews in early November 2017. The formal inauguration of the Bangabandhu Chair Professorship is tentatively planned around the middle of December 2017, at AIT, to which the selected candidate will be invited and is expected to attend.
