Under the India-UK Advanced Training Schools (IUATS) scheme offered within the Newton Fund, with the funding from the British Council and the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) the India-UK Advanced Training School will be held during 7-17 November 2016 in Gujarat, India.
The IUATS is being coordinated by Dr. Francisco Gonzalez-Longatt (Loughborough University, U.K.) and Dr Naran M., and Prof S.N. Singh (Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur) Prof. Furong Li (University of Bath, UK) and Dr Pierlugi Mancarella (The University of Manchester, UK) will support as Mentors. We are now inviting UK-based post-doctoral and early career (holding a PhD and having up to 10 years post-PhD research experience) to apply to attend this IUATS. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton-Bhabha IUATS programme.
Worldwide, 1.3 billion people either do not have access to electricity or have limited access to unreliable electricity; of this number more than 400 million are in India. Current forecasts predict that this number will remain roughly unchanged until 2030. One potential game changer is the development of Smart Communities is an idea similar to the more familiar Smart Cities. The training is designed to give early career and postdoctoral researchers a critical understanding of the main concerns related to the emerging idea of smart communities that will see the simultaneous presence and interactions of intermittent distributed generation, demand side response, energy storage, multi-energy networks, smart devices and new business/cooperative models .
This advanced training school will present and discuss an overview of key issues within the Smart communityâ€™s context with manifold topics, from energy planning to ICT requirements. Technical, environmental, economic, reliability and policy aspects of the relevant topics will be discussed in detail. The following topics will be addressed: Fundamentals of domestic and urban energy system planning; Impact analysis and optimal integration of distributed generation, demand response, and storage in low and medium voltage networks; Techno-economic and environmental assessment of energy systems and multi-generation; Impact of the electrification of heating and transport in urban areas and smart control for system support; ICT requirements and integrated power; and business models, commercial, regulatory and policy issues of future cities.
The two-week training includes:
1. Technical sessions covering more than 27 classroom hours addressing the key issues within the Smart communityâ€™s context with manifold topics, from energy planning to ICT requirements. Those technical sessions include classical lectures and hands-on practical training.
2. Two field trips to smart distribution grid pilot project- UGVCL, Gujarat and smart grid laboratory at IIT Gandhinagar.
3. Research sessions to allow participants to share their own research and expertise in at least one session.
4. Two (02) industrial talks to include local successful case studies
5. Two days are devoted to providing sustainability of the IUATS, exploring research collaborations (speed networking activity), research funding opportunities, etc.
