Background
The Transforming Energy Access - Learning Partnership (the TEA-LP) is supporting eight partner universities based in Africa in the development of new curricula centred on the theme of sustainable energy access for all. Through the TEA-LP, partner universities are supported in their design, promotion and implementation of appropriate postgraduate-level curricula for application in the off-grid energy sector, with the long-term objective of providing talented professional graduates with the skills and competencies to support Africa’s growing clean energy access sector. The TEA-LP provides both financial support (through direct grants) and technical support, provided, coordinated and managed by the University of Cape Town, to the Partner Universities to develop their curricula.
The Transforming Energy Access – Learning Partnership is one of ten initiatives being supported by the Transforming Energy Access programme (TEA), funded by the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom (DfID) and managed by the Carbon Trust. The TEA programme aims to foster the development of innovative technologies, business models, partnerships and skills that will accelerate access to affordable, clean energy services for households and enterprises in developing countries. The Low Carbon Energy for Development Network (LCEDN – www.lcedn.com) supports the University of Cape Town as Coordinators of the TEA-LP in managing a programme supporting African universities to develop curricula that meet the needs of the energy access sector, particularly off-grid.
Field of activity
A TEA-LP Fellow is sought to provide support for the implementation of the TEA-LP research agenda on gender, alongside organizational support for the TEA-LP programme including network building and outreach activities. The Fellow will be predominantly based at the University of Cape Town, with possible research visits to Loughborough University and additional travel to three events in other African countries:
- The TEA-LP Workshop 2, 23 – 29 February 2020 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
- SEForAll Forum, 25 – 29 May 2020 in Kigali, Rwanda
- The TEA-LP Workshop 3, August/September 2020 (final date and location TBC)
Tasks:
- Drive the implementation of the TEA-LP research agenda in collaboration with the TEA LP team and the LCEDN in the UK
- Independently conduct data collection and analysis activities for the TEA LP research agenda focused on gender, academic and sector needs.
- Assist with general operations for running of the TEA-LP
- Contributing to network building and communications
Candidate Profile:
- Academic background in energy-related topic at postgraduate level (Masters/PhD/Post-Doc)
- Demonstrated understanding/experience of energy-related gender issues
- Ability to work independently on a research topic
- Experience with qualitative research methods, including focus group facilitation is desirable
- Excellent writing skills, including reports and general communications.
Other:
We are looking for a dedicated person preferably with exposure to both African and European academic working environments, who is able to adapt and integrate at high speed into new tasks and teams.
Since this is an international placement opportunity the candidate need not be based in the placement country (South Africa) but must be willing to move to the country for the duration of the Fellowship.
Duration:
12 months, with the potential for an additional six months based on the performance of the fellow and by agreement with the TEA-LP team
Stipend:
The successful candidate will receive a stipend of ZAR 22,000 per month, and will also have travel and other allowable expenses covered. This would include the fellow’s travel to South Africa, as well as travel to the two workshops and SEforAll event, and possibly to Loughborough University.
