The current post is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced individual to join our NIHR Global Health Research Group (CLEAN-Air(Africa)) team as a quantitative research associate for an initial period of 1 year with future plans to extend the post if the Group sustains further funding.
CLEAN-AIR(Africa) is undertaking research and capacity building programmes in Ghana, Kenya and Cameroon to support population transition from polluting solid fuels and kerosene for cooking to clean fuels (gas and electricity) to address the substantial burden of disease from non-communicable diseases related to exposure to household air pollution. CLEAN-Air(Africa) aims to provide community derived research evidence to inform national policies for scaling clean energy access driven by governments from each focus country.
We are looking for an individual who has good quantitative, statistical skills to assist the Groups quantitative lead. Responsibilities will include application of epidemiological study methods, quality control of quantitative data collection across all countries/sites, data cleaning and analysis and contribution to dissemination through publication and production of policy briefs. It is likely the post will include a visit to one or more of the partner countries. Overall supervision will be given by the Group's Director - Professor Daniel Pope.
You will have a track record in the collection and dissemination of a range of quantitative data in a public health and/ or environmental context. Experience of working with researchers and research data from lower-and-middle-income (LMIC) countries and in the context of household air pollution and health will be an advantage, although not essential. Whilst you will not be responsible for designing epidemiological studies for the Group, underlying knowledge of epidemiological research methods underpinning these studies is essential. In supporting the Group's quantitative lead you will (i) be responsible for ensuring data collection is both valid and standardised and (ii) contribute to the analysis of this complex data and including dissemination of findings through publication to academic audiences and reporting to lay/ stakeholder audiences involved in policy making.
You must be organised, conscientious, productive and able to work both independently under tight deadlines and within a team with diverse research expertise. You will support quantitative research activities for the CLEAN-AIR(Africa) Group working with the Group's quantitative lead and local research coordinators from Cameroon, Ghana and Kenya. You will be responsible for ensuring data quality (validity and standardisation) across the three partner countries and, working with the quantitative lead, carrying out data analysis of complex and multi-country datasets, including household surveys, pollution data collected from study homes and fuel use patterns and behaviours. You will help ensure quality control of the data and analyse the data promptly in order to inform (i) the next stages of data collection for the focus countries and (ii) policy makers in discussions around their clean household energy agenda (e.g. through policy briefings). You will support publication of results in peer reviewed journals after analysis. During the course of the post you may travel with other members of the team to one or more of the focus countries (Kenya, Ghana and Cameroon) to monitor quality control of collected data and contribute to wider dissemination of findings. The post will initially be for 12 months from 1 April 2020 until 31 March 2021 with the possibility of renewal.
