A unique opportunity to access training directly from energy experts across Durham University departments in an intensive week of teaching.

This four and a half day course (12-16 February 2018) brings together leading experts to discuss how to understand energy in society through the various practices involved. From material culture studies to practice theory, from economics to visual studies, we explore the analyses available in the social science and humanities that will be needed to make sense of energy and to change the way we organize energy practices. The course introduces key theories and methods from anthropology and sociology, such as the idea of material cultures, everyday practices, organizational forms and social relations.

With presentations from leading experts at Durham University, this will effectively be a series of masterclasses in understanding energy practices in a social context. Each theme is introduced through theoretical discussion and case study examples. A site visit may also be included.

Indicative Contents:

• Understanding Practice Theory;
• Introducing Science and Technology Studies and other sociologies of science;
• Carbon trading systems and other economic interventions;
• Energy policy, and how to understand governance;
• Historical methods, energy practices and re-thinking transitions;
• Visual methods in the energy humanities;
• Energy justice and ethics.
