On the 7th February 2018, the UCL Energy and Development Group will be hosting a high-level panel discussion to debate the role of energy in delivering sustainable development.
The event launches their recent publication in Nature Energy which maps the contribution of energy to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (available here). The paper found evidence of synergies between 143 Targets and efforts to achieve SDG7, meaning that ~85% of 2030 Agenda targets are mutually reinforcing with SDG7. We also found evidence of trade-offs between SDG7 and ~35% of the 2030 Agenda targets. Many of these trade-offs relate to tensions between the need to rapidly expand access to basic services, and the need for efficient energy systems underpinned by renewable resources.
At this event, Julia Tomei and Francesco Fuso-Nerini will introduce the paper, setting the scene for a high-level panel to debate the role of energy in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. The panel will be chaired by Ben Milligan, and panellists will include:
